Second hand car checklist

Buying a second hand car can be a stressful process. A lot of people aren’t sure what they should be looking for apart from anything really obvious like a massive dent in the car or weird sounds.

We have put together a checklist to help any of you who aren't sure what to look for. This checklist doesn't include everything, but it's a good start. Checking these boxes could help you find any serious problems.

  1. Checking The Engine:

When you're looking at a used car, check underneath for signs of an oil or coolant leak. Make sure underneath the engine is dry.

2. Check The Bodywork:

Here, you're looking for any signs of re-painting or replaced panels that suggest the car might have been in an accident.

It's also really important to check for rust on all of the panels. Rust will start by bubbling under the paint. If left unchecked, it can force the paint off and eventually rust through, so it’s worth getting it fixed. Untreated stone chips and scratches can trigger rust.

3. Service History

Ask them for the service history of the car. You should also check the NCT certs to see if the mileage matches.

4. Check The Tyres

This isn't make or break, but it's important to check any used car has a decent set of tyres. If it doesn’t, you can negotiate money off the price because you'll have to replace them when you buy it at some stage.

5. Take It For A Test Drive:

Here, you first want to check that no warning lights are flashing up on the dashboard. Listen out for any noises or rattling. Make sure the brakes and clutch are responsive and working well.

If you want a second opinion, we offer a second hand car inspection service. We’ll visit the car and do a 100 point check and test drive. Give us a text or call 085-8722359 to arrange a date and time that suits once you have found your car.
